The shrine was established by Imperial decree in the early Heian period (800 AD) under Emperor Kanmu's command. It commemorates Princess Inoe, consort of Emperor Konin and daughter of Emperor Shomu, who was unjustly accused and confined during the Nara period. It serves as the guardian deity of Nara town and hosts festivals at its main hall.
To the left after passing through the southern gate, there's a subsidiary shrine known for matchmaking blessings, called Shusse-Inari Shrine. At the base of the guardian lion-dogs flanking the southern gate, people tie red strings for prayers such as halting runaways, matchmaking, and business prosperity.
The shrine grounds feature seasonal flowers like cherry blossoms and peonies, renowned for their vibrant colors and intricate craftsmanship. Seasonal Goshuin stamps are also popular among visitors.
