The history of Nara, dating back about 1,300 years

The city of Nara, then known as Heijo-kyo, was established in 710 and was the state capital until it moved to Kyoto in 794. It flourished as a leading international city, designed in a grid-like pattern modeled after the then-Chinese capital.

Buddhism also spread. As the facilities for praying for peace in the nation, the state erected magnificent Buddhist temples such as Todaiji Temple and Kohfukuji Temple. Those prominent temples also served as the centers of learning and culture.

In addition, various advanced cultures were brought in from China by the repeatedly sent official delegations. Those interactions resulted in a rich international culture called Tenpyo Culture in the eighth century, creating exceptional works of Buddhist art, sculpture, and crafts. Their influence provided the basis for the evolution of Japanese culture later.

Gourmet food in Nara

Nara also has a rich food culture with its unique charm passed down across the generations.

Must-try local specialties are Narazuke, Kakinohazushi, and Chagayu.

Narazuke is a fermented pickling vegetable in sake lees (a by-product from brewing sake) characterized by its unique and deep aroma and flavor.

Kakinohazushi is a

formed vinegared rice with mackerel or salmon on it and rolled with persimmon leaves. The subtle aroma of persimmon leaves makes it unique.

Chagayu is rice porridge boiled in brown hojicha (roasted green tea). Its appeal lies in its gentle flavor. The locals have traditionally served it for breakfast.

Moreover, we also recommend Asuka nabe, a traditional hot pot dish made with miso and milk for soup base that creates a rich flavor. Surprisingly, this dish is said to have been introduced in the 6th century.

If you like sweets, you must try kuzumochi, a traditional sweet of the Yoshino region made from the starch of kudzu, a legume in the. It is a traditional sweet with a smooth texture and a refined sweetness.

Why is narazuke brown? A rich aroma and umami created by the long aging period

Narazuke is a pickling vegetable with a unique brown color, but what makes it that color? The color is produced by its long aging period. Vegetables are repeatedly marinated in sake lees (a by-product of sake brewing), and slow fermentation over time causes sugars and amino acids contained in the sake lees to react with the vegetables' components, eventually turning them a deep brown.

The aging period can be as short as six months or as long as several years.

Narazuke boasts a rich aroma and deep flavor. Of course, it goes well with sake, rice, and ochazuke (rice stewed in tea). These days, it is even good with wine or whisky because it is minced and mixed with butter, like dried raisins. Narazuke reflects the tradition of Nara, so do give it a try.

Minshuku/Guest houses
For solo travelers or those on a budget, we recommend staying at a minshuku (Japanese-style bed and breakfast) or a guest house. The appeal of such accommodations lies in the cozy, homely atmosphere and the opportunity to interact with the locals. They may even be able to give you tourist information and tell you about hidden spots. Prices are reasonable and they are suitable for long stays, so you can have a comfortable time while keeping costs down.

Introducing gifts and mementos that are unique to Nara

With your travel memories, why not pick a unique memento for Nara? One of the most popular gifts is kakinohazushi, a pressed sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves. Known as a local delicacy, it is also an ideal gift as it can be stored at room temperature. Nara is also renowned as a tea-producing region. The fragrant Yamato tea is good to bring back and perfect for soothing travel fatigue.

We also recommend traditional crafts. Nara sarashi is a white cotton cloth with excellent water absorption, making it a popular and practical gift for handkerchiefs or towels. Nara Ningyo Ittobori is a wooden doll decorated with delicate carvings. You can display it in your room to relive the atmosphere of Nara.
