This was the former residence of Shurei Oyamada, the karo, or chief retainer, of the Yagyu Clan, who reorganized the clan's financial affairs. The building's stone wall is particularly magnificent, and is said to have been chiseled in the stonework style of the Owari Clan (of present-day Nagoya) in 1841.
