Some 3,000 lanterns glowing with light: Chugen Mantoro Festival/Kasuga Grand Shrine

In this festival, some 3,000 lanterns on the grounds of the Kasuga Grand Shrine that have been donated by members of the aristocracy, warrior class, and general public between 800 years ago and the present day are lit up. The event is held only on the nights of Setsubun (the last day of winter) in February and on the nights of August 14 and 15. With stone lanterns lined up in an orderly fashion from the Ninotorii Shrine Gate to near the Main Shrine, as well as hanging lanterns lining vermillion-lacquered corridors, the mystical sight of the glowing lanterns is like a scene from a dynastic picture scroll.
