At Tobihino, located on the grounds of Kasugataisha Shrine, a traditional event known as "Otondo" used to occur on Ko-shogatsu (the first full moon day of the year, the 15th day of the first month in the lunar calendar).
Today, it takes place on the fourth Saturday of January. A 5m x 5m, 3m high fire pit is set up in Tobihino, where old talismans, charms, and sacred ropes from the previous year are burned. You can also bring these items directly to the venue on the day of the event.
The fire from this pit will be relayed to Mt. Wakakusayama and will serve as the seed fire for the burning of Wakakusayama, which will take place on the same day (Wakakusa Yamayaki).
