It is believed to have been established as a branch temple for the scholar monks of Kohfukuji Temple. Initially, around 1,900 stone Jizo statues located on the temple grounds were used in the walls of Tamon Castle, constructed by the Sengoku warlord Matsunaga Hisahide in 1560. Murata Juko, credited with founding the tea ceremony and having been a monk at Shomyoji Temple, built the teahouse "Dokuro-an" (commonly known as Juko-an) and is recognized for introducing the realm of wabi-cha tea. On May 15th, the anniversary of his death, the main hall and teahouse are specially opened to the public.
