Celebrating the birthday of Gautama Buddha: Bussho-e/Todai-ji Temple

On the anniversary of the birth of Gautama Buddha, a ceremony called Bussho-e is held at Todai-ji Temple to celebrate his birth. A small mido hall decorated with flowers is erected in front of the Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall); a statue of baby Buddha is enshrined in the mido and a Buddhist mass is conducted. Visitors up until 14:00 may bathe the statue with sweet tea, cups of which are also handed out for everyone to enjoy.
