On the anniversary of the birth of Gautama Buddha, a ceremony called Busshō-e is held at Todaiji Temple to celebrate his birth. A small mido hall decorated with flowers is erected in front of the Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall); a statue of baby Buddha is enshrined in the mido, and a Buddhist mass is conducted. Visitors until 14:00 may bathe the statue with sweet tea, cups of which are also distributed for everyone to enjoy.
