Founded in the early Heian period (800) by the imperial order of Emperor Kanmu, this shrine honors the spirits of Emperor Kōnin's wife and Emperor Shōmu's daughter, Princess Inoue, who died in seclusion during the Nara period after being intriguingly accused. As the guardian deity of Naramachi, various festivals are held at the main hall.
Passing through the South Gate, to the left is Shusse Inari Shrine, a sub-shrine known for its benefits in matchmaking. Red strings are tied around the feet of the lion-dog statues on either side of the South Gate to pray for preventing runaways from home, for matchmaking, and business prosperity.
In the precincts, seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms and peonies, celebrated for their vivid colors and intricate craftsmanship, bloom vibrantly. Seasonal goshuin stamps are also popular.
