Sudoutennousha Shrine is located in Kidera, at the southern edge of Naramachi. The enshrined deity is Prince Sawara, who was posthumously named Emperor Sudou. He was implicated in the assassination of Fujiwara no Tanetsugu, a key figure in the construction of the new Nagaokakyo capital. Prince Sawara consistently sought to prove his innocence and met an untimely end while in exile on Awaji Island. This historic shrine was established in 806 to appease his vengeful spirit and is recognized as one of Nara's two major Goryo Shrines, built to placate the vengeful spirit of a specific person, along with the Goryo Shrine in Naramachi. Since ancient times, locals have revered it as the protective deity of the Kidera area.
The vermilion-hued main hall, designed in the Kasuga style, features a one-bay sanctuary topped with a cypress bark roof. It is situated at the back of the grounds, having been relocated from the former Wakamiya Shrine, which is part of the Kasugataisha Shrine. The oldest and most significant building, built in 1623, was transferred from the Kasugataisha Shrine to other sites. It has been designated an Important Cultural Property.
The goshuin (shrine seals) are well-known for their variety and beauty, making it challenging to choose just one. They range from standard goshuin to paper cutout versions, with new designs released monthly. Collectors even visit each month to gather the goshuin. A collaborative goshuin is also issued jointly with Goryo Shrine, one of Nara's two major collaborative goshuins.
