Japan's oldest Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane and his ancestors, is believed to be the birthplace of the Sugawara clan and the site of Michizane's birth. In honor of Michizane's divine virtue, it is sincerely worshipped by those who pray for exam success, academic improvement, and calligraphy skills.
A brush mound is situated on the grounds, and the Nara Brush Festival, along with a brush memorial service, takes place every year on the spring equinox. Additionally, during the plum season, the Bon Plum Exhibition is held, filling the air with the rich fragrance of plums from the old and giant trees that have been carefully cultivated, as well as from the rare golden plum variety.
