Futai-ji Temple was founded in the 9th century, around 847, by the monk Henjō, a disciple of the renowned Buddhist figure Kūkai, also known as Kōbō Daishi.
The temple was built to honor the memory of Ariwara no Narihira, a nobleman and poet who is often regarded as the model for the protagonist in The Tale of Ise (Ise Monogatari). Due to this connection, Futai-ji is sometimes referred to as Narihiradera, meaning "Narihira's Temple."
The Main Hall (Hondō) houses a statue of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), designated as an Important Cultural Property.
